(PHOENIX, Ariz., May 14, 2008) – Men may be doctorphobic but one area of health care they are opening up to is massage. According to studies, thirteen percent of adult males reported getting a massage in 2006, compared with just eight percent in 2004 -- an increase of 5.3 million men!
Whether they seek treatment to deal with an injured muscle or a relaxation session to relieve stress, it seems that more and more men are embracing massage.
“Massage is especially popular among men who play golf or participate in other activities like running or cycling,” says Tiffany Richards, owner of The Back Rub Company, a valley massage and wellness firm. “A lot of men opt for a sports massage because it makes them feel more manly.”
No matter what the reason, Richards says she is just happy that men are finally giving themselves permission to take care of themselves. Richards has noticed that more men are relaxing when it comes to the idea of receiving massage.
“It seems like there’s been a shift in thinking when it comes to men seeking preventative healthcare like massage therapy,” says Richards. “Maybe it’s because massage is showing to be more socially acceptable.”
According to the American Massage Therapy Association, massage increases relaxation, relieves muscle tension, fosters faster healing of muscles and ligaments, improves joint flexibility, boosts the immune system and decreases stress, anxiety, and blood pressure.
