Companies Join in November's Great American Smokeout
(PHOENIX, Ariz., November 16, 2009) - As companies continue to crunch budgets, they are looking at innovative ways to lower the costs associated with health insurance. One of the top two reasons for insurance hikes is tobacco use, and according the American Cancer Society, employers pay an average of $3,783 per smoker per year.
November is The Great American Smokeout, an annual event sponsored by the American Cancer Society to encourage smokers to quit cigarettes. The smokeout was first implemented in 1977 as a challenge to quit smoking for one day, in hopes that the smoker would quit forever.
"Employers pay 50 to 75 percent of their employees' insurance premiums," said Tiffany Richards, owner of The Back Rub Company, a Phoenix-based on-site employee wellness firm. "Many have realized that their employees' health has a huge impact on their bottom line and they are taking the necessary steps to create a culture of wellness within their organizations." More than 70 percent of adult smokers say they want to quit, but without help, fewer than five percent succeed. The Back Rub Company offers an on-site 60-minute smoking cessation workshop or an entire 5-week program in which participants are educated on effective smoking cessation techniques to discover the correct stop-smoking method.
For companies who schedule a smoking cessation workshop or program before December 31st, each participant will be entered in a drawing to receive a complimentary Auriculotherapy (Ear Acupuncture) session. Auriculotherapy is the stimulation of the ear to reduce the craving of smoking and treat addiction.
